This semester, Problems in Drawing I & II and Drawing III are focusing on installation in drawing – creating installations but still honing in on the aspect of drawing. The first assignment was to create a new installation inspired by an old drawing. In preparation  students examined artists like Ann Hamilton and looked back on Happenings.

Even though no one in the class except for one student has ever created an installation, the class dived in and created good work despite the intimidation. During critique, the students discussed what classified as an installation, how the work fit their definition, and strengths and weaknesses. Some comments that were made included ways to make drawings more installation by utilizing the space it’s in so the installation is unique to the space.
